AUTUMN HOLIDAYS

Autumn holidays in Vienna:
A boutique hotel for the golden autumn

Autumn gives Vienna a particular kind of calm. Not empty, never dull – just more spacious. The summer crowds have gone, the Christmas markets have not yet begun, the coffee houses feel properly alive again, and the vineyards on the edge of the city are in harvest. If you want to get to know Vienna at its most atmospheric, come in October or November.

The Guesthouse Vienna is a lovely base for an autumn break. We are in the 1st district, close to the city’s great museums, theatres and sights, and a place you will be glad to return to on cooler days – for coffee from our own roast, a glass in the Brasserie, or simply a warm rain shower after a long walk.

Why autumn may be Vienna’s finest season

In autumn, Vienna feels very much itself. The temperatures are pleasant, the parks turn gold, and the cultural season begins in earnest. The Vienna State Opera and the Burgtheater are in full swing. Museums open their major exhibitions. And while other cities start to slow down, Vienna fills with exactly the sort of visitors it suits best: people who come for culture, food and time well spent.

There is a practical advantage too. Hotels are usually less busy than in summer or Advent, so if you book for the autumn holidays, you often have more choice and more space.

Autumn highlights in Vienna

Vienna Wine Hiking Days – Every autumn, four routes lead through Vienna’s wine-growing areas: Neustift, Nussdorf, Ottakring and Mauer. Walk through the vineyards, stop for Sturm and young wine, and enjoy simple Viennese food along the way. Vienna is the only major city in the world with significant wine-growing within its boundaries, and autumn is when you feel it most.

Long Night of Museums – One evening in October, more than 100 museums and galleries open from 6 pm until 1 am. One ticket, countless doors. For art and culture lovers, it is a wonderfully intense way to experience the city.

Vienna Art Week – The city’s most important week for contemporary art, with galleries, studios and alternative spaces opening for exhibitions, guided visits and talks. Parallel Vienna and Open House Vienna add even more to discover.

Autumn Days at the Palmenhaus – In October, the Art Nouveau Palmenhaus in the Burggarten, five minutes from the hotel, becomes a market for heritage fruit varieties, regional produce, fine fruit brandies and handmade specialities.

Buch Wien – Austria’s largest book fair takes place every November, with publishers, readings and conversations with authors.

The first Christmas markets – From mid-November, the city’s Advent markets begin to open: on Rathausplatz, at Schönbrunn Palace, in the MuseumsQuartier and on Stephansplatz. Late autumn becomes the gentle beginning of Advent.

Autumn at the Guesthouse

Coming back to the Guesthouse after an autumn day in Vienna feels just right. The rooms are warm, the bathroom radiators are on – a small pleasure on a damp October afternoon – and in your room you will find a Jura espresso machine with our own house roast and Austrian wine in the minibar. If you feel like tea, we will gladly bring a selection to your room.

In the Brasserie, autumn arrives on the plate too: seasonal, regional cooking with depth and warmth. In the morning, start the day with à la carte breakfast, fresh pastries and a quiet look at Vienna waking up outside.

Autumn holidays with the family

Autumn half-term falls in different weeks across Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but Vienna works beautifully for a family break throughout the season. Museums offer special autumn programmes, the Prater stays open until the end of October, and Schönbrunn Zoo is especially beautiful in golden light.

For families, we recommend our 35 m² Deluxe Plus rooms, with space for an extra bed. Cots and high chairs are available free of charge. And when the children are tired after a full day, the Brasserie on the ground floor makes dinner easy, without leaving the hotel.
