SUMMER HOLIDAY

Summer holidays at a boutique hotel in Vienna

Vienna feels different in summer. Evenings stretch a little longer, courtyards fill with conversation, and culture moves outdoors. A summer stay here brings together world-class music, good food, open-air evenings and that unmistakable lightness the city wears so well at this time of year.

The Guesthouse Vienna makes an elegant base for it all. We are in the 1st district, directly opposite the Albertina, a short walk from the Vienna State Opera and St Stephen’s Cathedral. Many of the city’s summer highlights are close enough to reach on foot; the rest are only a short ride away.

Why Vienna is worth visiting in summer

Vienna is often thought of as a winter city: the Opera Ball, Christmas markets, grand coffee houses. But from June to September, it shows a more relaxed side. Pavement cafés fill up, the Danube Canal becomes a meeting place, and the whole city seems to spend more time outside.

The cultural calendar is extraordinary. The Vienna Philharmonic plays in front of Schönbrunn Palace, Rathausplatz becomes a vast open-air cinema, and the Danube Island hosts one of Europe’s largest free music festivals. Vienna in summer means great culture without ceremony: no dress code, no formality, just memorable evenings in beautiful surroundings.

Summer highlights in Vienna

Schönbrunn Summer Night Concert – Every June, the Vienna Philharmonic gives a free open-air concert in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. Thousands of visitors, a Baroque setting and world-class music under the evening sky.

Film Festival on Rathausplatz – From early July to early September, Rathausplatz becomes an open-air cinema, with music films on the big screen and food from around the world. Free entry, every evening, all summer long.

Danube Island Festival – Three days of music on the Danube Island, one of Europe’s largest open-air festivals. Rock, pop, electronic music, cabaret and more – all free of charge.

Vienna Opera Summer – Open-air opera in the heart of the city. In summer 2026, Bizet’s Carmen will be performed at the Opera Arena on Heumarkt, just a few minutes from the hotel.

Summerstage on the Danube Canal – Open-air bars, live music, readings and exhibitions along the water. A lovely place to spend a warm evening.

Kino am Dach – Open-air cinema on the roof of Vienna’s Central Library, with films in the original language and views over the city at sunset.

Your summer retreat in the city centre

Vienna can be lively in summer, which makes it all the more important to have somewhere calm to return to. Our rooms are air-conditioned and designed as quiet retreats from the heat of the day. The Superior Rooms face the inner courtyard; the Deluxe Rooms look out over the city and are particularly beautiful in the evening light.

After a long summer day in Vienna, few things feel better than returning to The Guesthouse: a refreshing rain shower, a chilled glass of Austrian wine from the minibar, and the promise of more of the city to discover tomorrow.
