FAMILY HOLIDAYS

Family holidays in Vienna:
Boutique hotel for families with children

Vienna surprises most families. The city has a reputation for opera and grand museums, but it turns out to be remarkably easy with children: the world’s oldest zoo, a proper amusement park a short ride from the centre, hands-on museums built with kids in mind, and enough parks and ice-cream stops scattered along the way to rescue any afternoon.

The Guesthouse Vienna is a boutique hotel that happens to be genuinely good for families — not because we have a plastic play corner somewhere off reception, but because we are calm, central and well set up for it. Cots, high chairs and extra beds are always available. The location means you spend less time travelling between things and more time actually doing them. It all adds up to days that feel less like logistics and more like a holiday.

Why Vienna works so well for families

City breaks with children can go either way. Vienna tends to go the right way. The city is compact, easy to navigate on foot and well connected by public transport — children under six travel free. Younger visitors get into most major museums for nothing. Between the sights, there are playgrounds, green spaces and places to sit that do not require planning in advance. Vienna rewards the relaxed approach: a morning at the zoo, an afternoon at the Prater, dinner together in the Brasserie. Some of the best days need no more structure than that.

Family favourites in Vienna

Schönbrunn Zoo – The world’s oldest zoo, set inside the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. More than 700 species, a petting zoo for smaller children and good pushchair access throughout. About 20 minutes by underground from the hotel.

Vienna Prater – The Giant Ferris Wheel, rollercoasters, ghost trains and carousels, with no entry fee to the park itself — you pay only for what you ride. A classic, and one that tends to go down well with adults too.

Natural History Museum – Dinosaur skeletons, meteorites, animals and interactive displays. Children enter free. Ten minutes on foot from the hotel, on Maria-Theresien-Platz.

Technical Museum – Hands-on exhibitions, a high-voltage show, a walk-in hot-air balloon and miniXplore for toddlers. One of the city’s best days out for children of almost any age.

ZOOM Children’s Museum – In the MuseumsQuartier, around 15 minutes on foot. Children can build, experiment and explore with all their senses. For ages 0 to 12; booking ahead is recommended.

Haus des Meeres – More than 10,000 animals across eleven floors of a former flak tower: sharks, turtles, tropical fish and monkeys at the top. Easily reached by public transport.

Butterfly House in the Burggarten – Hundreds of tropical butterflies flying freely through a beautiful Art Nouveau glasshouse. Five minutes from the hotel, next to the Hofburg.

St Stephen’s Cathedral – Climb 343 steps up the south tower, or take the lift up the north tower. The view over Vienna is worth the effort.

Rooms for families

Our 35 m² Deluxe Plus rooms work well for families: enough space for an extra bed or cot without feeling cramped, and the same comfortable finish as the rest of the house. The Maisonette Suites are even better for families with a little more luggage or a need for two proper levels — everyone gets some space of their own.

Every room has a Jura espresso machine and a well-stocked minibar. Cots and high chairs are provided at no extra charge. Let us know before you arrive and we will have the room ready.

A central location makes all the difference

With children in tow, proximity matters more than almost anything else. From the hotel, St Stephen’s Cathedral is five minutes on foot, the Natural History Museum ten and the Butterfly House five. The Naschmarkt is a 15-minute walk, and the nearest underground station is just around the corner — from there, the Prater, Schönbrunn and the Technical Museum are all a direct ride away.

For arrivals, we offer a fixed-price airport transfer in a Mercedes Vito: roomy enough for a family with luggage, a pushchair and everything that comes with travelling with children. If you are driving, the Neuer Markt car park is two minutes away, and our valet team can take care of the rest.
